Documentary Film Evaluation

This film easily depicts the message that it is trying to convey: to live sustainably. I understand what is being said in the interviews very well, but in all the segments, the visual metaphors were confusing, and I got lost in some of them, taking away from the viewing of the film. In the first segment, I found that all of the speaking and conversation was readily heard, but it was hard to decode what the different titles and facts were saying in between. I must say though, if I didn’t already know about green products, I wouldn’t be completely convinced due to the quick enunciation of words in the segment with the description of different ways to live sustainably. I would not be able to note what they said, so it would not have stayed in my brain. But with more time, and more knowledge, this can be a very nice piece of work.

There were a lot of very good parts to this film as well. Mostly all of the camera shots were still, and well thought out. In the “Sharing is Caring” visual metaphor, the camera was very shaky, and I didn’t quite understand how that was supposed to relate to the film. But it was very well thought out, and put together nicely, considering what they had to work with. Also, the music was kept at an appropriate volume throughout the film, and it added a nice background sound to make the film seem smooth. In the “Environment=Economy?” segment, the clip of a street interview was extremely blurry, and hindered the experience. But with a little editing magic, it was pulled off to look like it was supposed to be like that. Surprising enough to me, all of the transitions in the film between each of the segments was extremely smooth. Awesome work on our teacher Mrs. Pomerantz’s part! The film turned out to be great, despite my predictions about everyone’s willingness to work with one another. Guess I was wrong!

Like I said before, it definitely would have been beneficial had we had more time. But, with time constraints, and EOC’s, it is understandable that we had a limited amount of time. And for the future, more time would be a great additive to the film, but I sincerely think that we did more than the best we could have done with the time that we had. On the trip to Alberici, and to the Saint Louis Zoo, it would have been nice to have a larger attendance. Not due to truancy at all, but simply the unwillingness to take initiative. I also feel like the different segment groups could have had more communication throughout, rather than just at the end of the project, about uniformity and flow. With the material that we had, we could have step back and looked at it and said “We need to get some better stuff”, but no one really took a look at the big picture. So we wouldn’t end up with the shaky images, and the incorrect language. And so we could correct our errors, had more than just the bare minimum of footage. We could have done a little better with that.

I found new intrests, and understood new information in these 8 weeks. I have mainly gotten new skills. The biggest one, and the most beneficial I think, is knowing how to refine my internet research. To really find the material that I need. I now know the importance of having your clipboard with you when you need to take notes and get permission for interviews, and ironically funny day that was. And, for the most part, it has enriched me as a person. I feel like it is so much easier to pick up the phone and talk to someone that I have only once met or never met at all. I feel like I can walk into, say a job interview, and feel confident in what I am saying to the person. And, it has increased my patients capacity, A LOT. So there are things like that, and then there are things that are about our actual topic. I can confidentially say that I did not know that cork wood can be made into an environmentally friendly flooring. Also, the different specialty skills that I got from this experience. I have surely learned some awesome film making skills, and I know that I will use those in my future.

I know that for my personal path, I would like to take a position in sound engineering, acoustical assessment, or theatrical sound tech, and maybe a little Dj-ing on the side. And I will always be needing to make a presentation, or update a website with things like video demos or formal information videos. These skills will help along my path and continue to assist me at my destination for work life. For sure though, out of all the dads out there, I will make the best family home videos!

A person’s best incentive for carbon control is taxes, because it is the simplest way to keep account of them.  Using taxes as a device of control also lets the government in on the whole deal because they will be the ones regulating it.  It is a very appealing concept that one has to pay for what they waste, and not only pay, but pay extra.  There would be limits and special cases though, as there are for everything.

Day at Alberici/Zoo

I thought that the trip to Alberici and The Zoo was very productive.  We got a lot of interviews, and a lot of experience to boot.  We all became accustomed to approaching people, and asking them questions.  Although not very many people attended, it was still quite an experience.  I was the only person from my group to attend, so I temporarily joined another group to get video.  Most of what we got was very good, with some minor issues with some of the footage (i.e. finger on lens; sound issues).  But all in all, it was a fun and productive trip.

  • WS: Wide Shot: I feel like we would use this to take in a person’s background as well as the person.  If they work somewhere, or have an acheivement, they should be showing it.  Also, we could have someone stand in front of a sign.
  • MS: Medium Shot:  We would use this just for general interviewing, people on the street.
  • CU: Close Up: Probably if we are trying to prove a point, and we would show that by abreviating the mouth movements.
  • ECU: Extreme Close Up: To focus on an important idea.

This posting describes a group of (what I have come to believe are some pretty substantial) people who have made a pledge to change things–drastically–in their homes and businesses, and our country. This group’s base, is that for things to be sustainable, they have to be shared. Essentially, they are saying that a global crisis, needs a global solution. This is basically a list of things that this certain group vows to do, in order to improve the economy, but more importantly, the environment. They also describe how other businesses can improve.
